Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. It actually commemorates the Mexican army’s surprising victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While the day isn’t widely celebrated in Mexico, it’s popular in the U.S. as a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture.
In many cities across the U.S., you’ll see parades, Mexican food festivals, mariachi music, and cultural events. It’s a perfect time to practice your Spanish and learn more about Mexico.
