How to Start Learning Spanish (and Actually Stick With It)
Learning Spanish is one of the best decisions you can make. Whether it’s for travel, career, culture, or connecting with others, Spanish opens doors. But let’s be honest—starting a new language can feel overwhelming. The key isn’t just starting… it’s sticking with it.
When I started learning Spanish, I had no plan—just motivation. I quickly realized I needed structure. If you’re just starting out, or struggling to keep going, here’s what helped me—and what might help you too.
1. Set a Clear “Why”
Your reason for learning Spanish has to be stronger than your excuses. Do you want to travel to Mexico or Spain? Speak with coworkers? Understand Latin music? Write it down and remind yourself daily.
2. Use an App (but Use It Consistently)
Apps like Lingobi give you daily practice with games, quizzes, and real conversations. But you have to show up. A few minutes a day beats one long session a week.
3. Talk to Real People
Textbooks are great, but real conversations are where you grow. Use apps with community features, like Lingobi, to practice with native Spanish speakers in a fun, low-pressure way.
4. Make Spanish Part of Your Life
Label items around your house. Make your grocery list in Spanish. Change your phone’s language. Listen to reggaetón, watch Netflix in Spanish, follow Spanish-speaking creators online. Immersion doesn’t require travel.
5. Don’t Fear Mistakes
You will mess up. That’s part of learning. What matters is staying consistent and learning from your mistakes. Laugh at them, keep going, and you’ll get better faster than you expect.
Everyone starts somewhere. What matters most is that you start—and you keep going. Use what works for you, find a rhythm, and don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.
