One of the most common mistakes English speakers make when learning Spanish is confusing pedir and preguntar.
Both verbs involve communication, but they are used in different situations.
The Simple Rule
Pedir = to ask for something.
Preguntar = to ask a question.
If you're requesting an object, a favor, or permission, use pedir. If you're looking for information, use preguntar.
