Renting an Apartment in Spanish: Five Words to Know
Finding a place to live is exciting, but a rental listing in another language can raise a lot of questions. How much is the monthly rent? Is a deposit required? Are utilities included?
Knowing a few words won’t answer every question for you, but it can make a listing easier to understand and give you a place to start a conversation.
Five terms you’ll see and hear
Alquiler can refer to the rent or the rental. A depósito is a deposit, while the contrato de alquiler is the rental agreement. The propietario is the property owner, often the person renting it out, and servicios can refer to utilities such as water and electricity.
¿Los servicios están incluidos en el alquiler?
Are utilities included in the rent?
Rental vocabulary varies by country. You might hear arriendo instead of alquiler, or casero for a landlord. The terms of an agreement also vary, so ask which services are included and what the deposit covers.
Match the five terms below, then think about which question you would ask before choosing a place.
